In a meadow where the flowers bloomed with colors unseen by most, there lived a fae named Lirael. Unlike the other fae, whose wings fluttered delicately or sparkled with starlight, Lirael’s ears were her most remarkable feature: two translucent wings, soft as butterfly wings, curving from either side of her head. But there was something even more unusual about her—she was blind.

Lirael had never seen the world in the way others did. Her eyes were pale, glassy orbs that gave her an ethereal, distant look. But she wasn’t troubled by her blindness. Instead, she had learned to “see” through sound, touch, and the gentle hum of the world around her.

Her wings—the ones on her ears—had a unique gift. They could catch the faintest vibrations in the air, picking up the whispers of wind, the rustling of leaves, and the pulse of life hidden beneath the earth. With each flutter of her butterfly wing ears, she could hear the world in a way no one else could.
